A line that is both absurd and powerful. That is, until you get over the juxtaposition, because of course every day is the same until it isn’t. What the heck is that even supposed to mean?! Still when you do, you realize it’s raw truth—it’s potency. It also helps that it’s a quote from one of my favorite authors, Bernard Cornwell, a man who can write extremely compelling historical fiction. Hello Uhtred from the Saxon Tales. Yes, I called it the Saxon Tales, not that hogwash from Netflix, The Last Kingdom. Sorry, Mr. Cornwell, I know that’s the name of the first book—which is phenomenal—but the show really … well, it really took some liberties didn’t it?

But I digress, the quote is one of those lines that you nearly scoff at on your first read. Then it sits there, like a little goblin, nagging at the back of your mind. It pokes and prods at you, until you can’t help but go back and reread the line.

Every day is ordinary until it isn’t.

Then it hits you, or, like all art, it hits on the meaning you take from it. Today I wanted to share what meaning I gained from this beautifully crafted line.

It’s a measure of time’s passage, if one were to plant a camera in the past—just observing some scene of our life play out—we would be shocked by what we saw. The massive differences in who we are. It’s also a comment on how abrupt life can change. The monotony of day-to-day life suddenly overcome by chaos and confusion. Yet, one of the more joyful concepts derived from its meaning—one I particularly prescribe to—is the thought that if you continue pushing forward, continue fighting the good fight, you WILL be rewarded with that change you desire. Maybe it will be slow or maybe it will be all at once, but however it comes about, one day you will look back and see how far you’ve come.

Every day is the same until it isn’t.

As a particularly heartwarming card my mom made for me put it: Wake up, kick butt, repeat.

If you continue to do that, you will achieve that goal of yours. It might not be the golden, gleaming beacon you originally sought, but does that change its significance? Does the end destination matter as much as the growth you made along the way? I don’t think so. I think that if you find your happiness, even if it doesn’t grant you all the accolades you desired, then you have achieved your goal.

As a debut author, I can tell you that I have lived through about as much anxiety and doubt as I can manage in a year. How many one-star reviews are coming my way? Is my writing even good? Are all my family and friends just giving me good reviews because they like me and not for what I wrote? Am I out of my element? All questions that plague me day after day.

Yet, I keep pushing on. Because when I consider what I set out to do. What I wanted to achieve. What I wanted to see in the day that isn’t. I realize that it’s just me and my family. It’s just me pursuing my goals. It’s my daughters knowing that—without a doubt—their dad believes they can be the hero too. I mean it’s official now, I wrote a book (now two books) about it! It’s also me discovering who I am, and in so doing becoming a better person for myself and everyone around me. So, go ahead and chase those dreams. After all …

Every day is the same until it isn’t.
